Luxury car buyers will sit and take notice in 2009 when Cadillac begins to roll out three new models to complement or update its existing automotive line. GM let its grip off of the Cadillac design team long enough for them to create three truly stunning, yet highly useful products, vehicles which will do battle with the best from BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes.
The first vehicle to be released will be the CTS sport wagon, a car that fills a gap in the GM line up. With its competitors already selling five passenger wagons, GM needed this car to appeal to a primarily European audience, although the CTS wagon will also be sold in the US. Going on sale in the Spring, the wagon will be designated as a 2010 model and pull duty as the second leg in the CTS fleet.
The second vehicle to make its way forward is the SRX crossover, a vehicle that was first introduced in 2004. Sharing the wagon's platform, the SRX is targeted to consumers who want the space of a large SUV but the fuel economy of a wagon. Available in two or four wheel drive, the newest version of the SRX takes its design cues from the Provoq Concept, a vehicle that has toured the auto show circuit to wide acclaim.
The third installment in the Cadillac arsenal for 2009 is the CTS coupe, a truly stunning two door model absent of a B pillar. I had a close up look at the concept CTS at the 2008 NAIAS (Detroit Auto Show) and can say that GM pulled all the stops out on this car. From the front seat forward the coupe is all CTS, but from the rear seat back the Provoq design is quite evident.
All three vehicles will be powered by 3.6L V6 engines with a larger displacement V6 also available. The European market will see the 2.9L turbo-diesel V6; no word yet if this same engine will be made available in America.
As for the long awaited Cadillac CTS V Series, the highest output Cadillac ever built, that car is reportedly on hold. High fuel prices may kill off the car, but if prices stabilize at a lower threshold, then one of the fastest luxury cars ever built will soon join the Cadillac line up.
